California bacon law takes effect

A California law approved by voters that promises to get breeding pigs out of narrow cages that prevent them from standing or turning will finally take effect Saturday, after years of delays and warnings that the rules could lead to price spikes and pork shortages. But it will be six months before California grocery shoppers can be sure that pork chops they buy under the new law will be from a pig whose mother wasn’t confined in a so-called gestation crate. That’s because while the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law, the state recently agreed to allow pork slaughtered before July 1 to be sold in California markets and restaurants for the rest of the year. That decision gives farmers and grocery stores time to adjust. NEW YORK — A onetime resident of the Upper East Side, Giants outfielder Michael Conforto was back in his old neighborhood Friday morning. A New York Met for the first seven seasons of his career, Conforto was able to take his old route Citi Field before he made his first return as a member of the opposition. But it wasn’t necessarily by choice.Conforto used to live across the street from the Hospital for Special Surgery, where he was a frequent visitor during his time in New York and on Friday went to receive an MRI on his left hamstring, which he injured in the Giants’ second game in Toronto. The results were encouraging, only a mild strain of the fascia, not muscle, but the injury could keep Conforto from appearing in the series against his former club or limit him to pinch-hitting duties.“I was looking forward to stepping in the box and playing in front of these fans again,” Conforto said. “That’s kind of heartbreaking, a little bit.”With Alex C...

Tens of thousands of sea otters once roamed the California coast, but fur traders hunting their pelts decimated nearly all populations north of the Golden Gate by the early 20th century. But what would it mean to try to bring these fuzzy, frolicking semi-aquatic mammals, which have been protected under the Endangered Species Act since 1977, back to local waters?Last year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published a report about the feasibility of reintegrating otters along the West Coast in the hopes that their return will help preserve kelp forests, curb overpopulation of sea urchins and keep the Bay’s ecosystem healthy. On their quest to pinpoint ideal sites from the northern tip of Oregon to the San Francisco Bay, the federal government’s otter dreamers came to Emeryville on Thursday, the final stop of a 16-city tour gathering public input regarding the potential impact of the plan on fishing, industry and other socio-economic factors.Lilian Carswell, the Southern Sea Otte...
