This California baseball institution has it, plus so much more

Babe Ruth was a world-class player in a couple of senses. When he wasn’t hitting grand slams, he was playing the, er, field. Evidence of his dalliances can be found in Southern California’s Institute for Baseball Studies and Baseball Reliquary – a half-smoked cigar Ruth supposedly left in a Philadelphia brothel in 1924.“That evening, a Yankee player observed Babe sitting in a big chair in an upstairs room with a brunette on one knee and a blonde on the other,” the exhibit informs. “As the girls poured a bottle of champagne onto his head and shampooed his hair with it, Babe smiled and exclaimed, ‘Anybody who doesn’t like this life is crazy!’ The next afternoon at Shibe Park, the Bambino, with barely two hours sleep, hit a pair of home runs.”The institute and the Baseball Reliquary are full of such wonderful nuggets of history. Two separate collections sharing the same space at Whittier College, the troves include rare material on the Negro Leagues and early Me...Felon arrested following SWAT standoff in Santa Rosa

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee’s GOP-dominated House is preparing to vote Thursday on whether to expel three Democratic members for their demonstration calling for gun control following the Nashville school shooting, an extraordinary move that the chamber has used only a handful of times since the Civil War.Reps. Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson are the subjects of the ouster vote. Last week, the trio approached the front of the chamber floor and chanted back and forth with gun control supporters who packed the gallery days after six people, including three children, were fatally shot at The Covenant School in Nashville.Their possible expulsion has once again thrust Tennessee into the national spotlight, underscoring not only the ability of the Republican supermajority to silence opponents, but also its increasing willingness to do so. The move sends a chilling message just as lawmakers grapple with how to respond to the devastating shooting.Even before the House p...Lampard returns to Chelsea as manager until end of season

In a wild season of comings and goings at Chelsea, Frank Lampard’s out-of-the-blue return to Stamford Bridge is among the most improbable of the lot.Lampard, Chelsea’s record scorer and one of its greatest ever players, was hired as interim manager until the end of the season on Thursday to give the club time to find a permanent replacement for the fired Graham Potter. It will be Lampard’s second spell as Chelsea manager — he was fired in January 2021 after 18 months in charge and replaced by Thomas Tuchel — and said it was an “easy decision” to come back.“This is my club,” he said at a hastily arranged news conference at Chelsea’s training base.“I’m confident in myself, I have a good understanding in the squad — of course I’ve worked with a lot of them before — but also the training ground, the stadium, the fans, what Chelsea fans want, and I’ll do my utmost to give them what they want.”Lampard’s first spell coaching Chelsea came before the arrival of club’s curren...Live Updates| LIV’s Oosthuizen tied for lead at Masters

ORLANDO, Fla. (WSVN) – A lesson plan that included having students write their own obituaries has cost a psychology teacher his job at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando.Jeffrey Keene, said there was going to be an active shooter drill at the school and thought he could tie it into a lesson about safety and reflection on what’s important. Keene asked the students, “If they died 24 hours from now, what would they do differently than they did yesterday?” During his first-period class, a student got upset and asked to speak to a counselor, shortly after a supervisor came to observe his lecture during the second period.“I put a disclaimer on the bottom of the lesson saying this is in no way to upset you,” Keen said. He tried to example himself to the supervisor but was shut down. Keene said his intention was never to stress his students out. “When they said you have the option to resign without violating your contract, I said, ‘I didn’t do anyt...Latest news
